Waste Audits

When it comes to waste, our motto is, “You can’t manage what you don’t measure”.

With 20 years experience in waste auditing, analysis and reporting, we are still crazy about waste.

After implementation of our programs, our clients typically see an increase in recycling of around 30-40%, and a reduction in waste and recycling costs, on average  of around 20%.

About our Waste Audits

At Great Forest Australia, we see a waste audit as a forensic-like exercise.  Our audits involve physically going through bags and bins of waste and recycling, separating different materials into specific categories and recording what we find.

For example, an audit of an office tower might tell us:

  • How many kg and litres of waste is going to landfill and being recycled.
  • Of the waste going to landfill, how much of it is recyclable
  • How much and what types of materials are being recycled
  • The contamination rate for each recycling stream, and the most common items of contamination
  • Data for each tenant and each floor

We conduct waste audits for organisations, councils, office towers, retailers, shopping centres, hotels and food courts across Australia.

Our waste audits typically provide:

  • Base line data ie 150kg per day of landfill, 60kg recycling, 29% of waste is recycled
  • Composition of landfill ie 25% of landfill by weight is made up of paper, 20% mixed containers, 22% disposable coffee cups
  • Contamination levels and main items of contamination in recycling streams ie 15% contamination in mixed container recycling, with soft plastic packaging as the main contaminant
  • Specific changes that need to be made to improve the recycling rate (implementing these changes is our speciality)
  • An overview of how waste and recycling is managed. ie the landfill skip bins are 75% full when being emptied, driving up costs
  • An assessment of whether you are paying too much for your waste and recycling contracts
